Hubert Schmalix
1952–2025
Hubert Schmalix (1952 Graz – 2025 Los Angeles) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Max Melcher from 1971 to 1976. In the early 1980s he gained international recognition as an exponent of “Neue Malerei” (New Painting); his work was shown at the 1980 Venice Biennale, in “aktuell '83” at Munich's Lenbachhaus, at London's Tate Gallery and, in 1984, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Biennale of Sydney. After an extended stay in the Philippines he settled in Los Angeles in 1987, where he lived and worked until his death. From 1997 he headed a master class in painting as professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His work is characterised by expressive colour, strong contours and a seemingly naive figuration. His works are held in collections including the Belvedere and mumok in Vienna and the Neue Galerie Graz.
