Issa Salliander
b. 1984
Issa Salliander (b. 1984 in Stockholm) is a Swedish painter. She moved to Oxford as a teenager, where she began her art studies, and completed her master's degree at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2006. In gestural oil paintings that move between figuration and abstraction, she addresses opposites such as good and evil or light and darkness – and the humour and absurdity they contain. She draws on popular culture, particularly twentieth-century rock music, as well as on the European masters and Abstract Expressionism. She has had solo exhibitions in Oslo, Vienna, Mexico City and Stockholm, among other places; in 2024 her work was included in the exhibition “Breasts” at Palazzo Franchetti in Venice. With “Issa Salliander x Den of Wolves” (2024/25) she brought painting together with a video game.
