Katharina Grosse
b. 1961
Katharina Grosse was born in 1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau and lives and works in Berlin. She studied at the art academies in Münster and Düsseldorf. From 2000 to 2010 she was a professor at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, and from 2010 to 2018 she taught painting at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Grosse became known for her large-scale in situ paintings. For these she applies paint with a spray gun directly onto walls, floors, architecture and landscape. The first of these works was made in 1998 at Kunsthalle Bern. She also paints on canvas in the studio. Her work has been shown at venues including Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin, MoMA PS1's Rockaway! series in New York, Carriageworks in Sydney, Centre Pompidou-Metz and the 56th Biennale di Venezia. Her works are held in collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2014 she received the Oskar Schlemmer Prize.
